Rethinking Your Leads Strategy — 3 Types of Prospects to Avoid

 by Jae Smith
As an Internet Marketer and coach, I encounter a lot of riff-raff when it comes to generating leads for my business. Having to daily sift through the non-sense led me to give a couple of tips for what to do to rethink your lead generation strategy so that you can spend less time on those who are not serious about what what you are doing and put it where it is needed most, with those who want and need your services.
First off, lets identify three types of prospects by which you would want to run for the hills and get the hell out of dodge for so as not to waste your precious resource of time.

Broke Prospects

This is definitely a spot-on giveaway for a broken mindset. This is an indication of many things but the biggest is that a prospect that says that they don’t have money or can’t afford it is usually one that do not have the power to make things happen. This lack of resourcefulness creates yet another segue to a myriad of other deficiencies and skill sets which ultimately means that you will eventually encounter a deficit in their performance, maintenance of service or a clingy/needy hold on you. It is sort of like that puppy dog that humps your leg for attention.

This type of mindset will not grow your business. Due to the fact that usually this type of mindset has so many pressing problems in their lives, they are usually time/energy hogs. If I thought it would be productive to dispense your time in this area, I would advise you to help. However, truth of the matter is unless there is an ability to be a self-starter and problem-solver in those that you serve, you will indeed, be wasting your time for this is not the type of prospect that will serve your business. Heck, they can’t serve themselves properly let alone your business. Hit the delete button!

Snake Oil Salespersons-Recruiters Prospects

I have to tread with trepidation here for I don’t wish to put all recruiters in a bad light. Fact is, many recruiters are out to have you had. Once they get you signed up, you don’t hear from them again and they did not have the decency to sponsor you and show you how to market effectively which is the hallmark of a true leader. When you are on the Social Media networks befriending people and they are befriending you, you can’t help but wonder what the motive is.

Just this past week on Facebook, no sooner than I accepted a friend request from someone, they hit me up for a sale for their biz opp. Anyone who reviews my profile knows that I am well-entrenched and focused on my business, yet they cannot resist the temptation to try to sell me on quitting what I am doing to come join them in what they are doing. When you are prospecting, beware of those snake oil salespersons who would try to lure you away from your business to get you into theirs.

That means they are narcisstically ignoring the importance of your goals so that you can be sucked into their agenda of recruiting. They don’t have your best interest in mind and that is soon discovered after you hand over your bank card to their MLM company. Besides, you shouldn’t spend your money on the wrong tools or resources.

So, in effect, when you are prospecting, avoid those who are fishing for you in return because if they were truly worthy and successful, they would not be hunting you. Make no mistake, successful marketers are the hunted. They do NOT have to chase anything or anyone to get business or prospects. Mark these types for deletion from your list, too.

Romantic Interest Prospects

Of the three types of prospects to avoid, I don’t know which is more dispicably unsettling in my stomach. However, nothing turns me off more than someone ignoring the fact that I am in business and all they want to do is try to swoon me with their idea of what romance is. God help me! You definitely want to delete this type from your list because they have absolutely no interest in your business and once again, it’s ALL about THEM. My concern is that I am tired of seeing new entrepreneurs being introduced to the market to be preyed upon.

Now, if you happen to meet someone online and you find romantic interest in them, great! However, there is still a caveat and that is those that you have a romantic relationship with will be less likely to do business with you. By the way, that includes friends getting too close to you. You really want to form the solidarity and respect of a business relationship.

If you want something deeper, it is better to form something of a mentor-partner relationship. For romance, you are better off at a dating site. At least you know what the true premise is when you make a connection there. When prospecting, hold the romance and if you are being pursued that way, delete and replace! Romance will not generate leads or grow your business.

Taking the Next Step

Now that you have given all the riff-raff the boot, what next? I am extremely elated to hear you ask!

A) Put your sales message in place using media or technology. If you have a video, presentation or sales letter to do the selling for you, many times this is much more effective than your doing the actual selling. The psychology of the sales message is well-thought out and prepared and it eliminates your having to develop this skill when you have material to do it in your place. You get to focus on marketing and drivingtraffic to that presentation or video while discovering what works and what doesn’t.

B) Filter the process even further. Make a form questionnaire on your blog that requires that prospects answer certain questions before you contact them and waste your time. If one of your questions you ask is,”Are you willing to spend money on your business and if so, what is your budget?” and the prospect puts “0″ as an answer, you know to say, “next.” Making a form application with Survey Monkey is a great alternative to putting it on a blog if you don’t have one built yet. Also, you get to discover a prospects level of mindset, whether they are a good fit for your search criteria and if they are ready to move on to the next step.

C) There are many ways to target prospects but if you are using Social Media, use search terms to find those that you are interested in promoting your offers to. Use search terms such as, “rich dad poor dad,” or “MLM” or “entrepreneur.” Those are the type of people you want to befriend or add to your list. Once you have them on your list, PLEASE, don’t go hitting them up for a sale right away. Nurture your friendship

by “liking” and commenting on what they do. Find out what interests them. Chat with them and discover what they need most in their business and help them solve it. Once you have done that, ONLY THEN do you ask for the sale. Be there for them long after the sale has been consummated. That’s how you prospect and build a lifetime of loyal customers,

Obviously, there is more to this than I have outlined. You have to search and research and learn. Once you have learned, apply what you have learned. Prospecting and creating a better lead generation strategy takes practice and a bit of time to master. It is well worth the reward of having endless leads because you know that you took the time to cultivate a responsive list that has NOTHING to do with numbers or the amount of people that you have accumulated. You can have 3000 people on your list and they DO NOTHING. They don’t respond, “like” or comment. If they are not doing the aforementioned, they definitely won’t open their wallets to make the purchase. So, get crackin’! Go create that list and make relationships. That will be the lifeblood of your success.

All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you would fix for those who werent too busy in search of attention.

Hi there! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

Actually, regardless of what blog platform you use, all sites/blogs have potential to be hacked into. If you have a self-hosted blog using WordPress, then try installing the plug-in security called SecurePress by SecureLive. There are several security plug-ins to choose from. Just Google it. If, however, you decide that you want to change your blogging platform, there are many choices as well. Blogger and Blogspot are most popular. Http://wix.com have free sites but do check the specifications under which terms the site is free. However, hosting your own blog is the best way to go. As I have previously mentioned, just make sure you install security on it, and do upgrade to the premium security rather than sticking to the free version. Hope this helps. Yours, Jae
